The Kit Carson Home and Museum was originally
opened to the public in 1952. Since that time nearly a million people have
been through the Museum this has taken a toll
on-structures that were never intended to be more than single family homes.
They are now in the process of completely restoring
the home and reinterpreting and reinstalling the exhibitions throughout
the Museum. This is both a slow and costly undertaking.
Slow, because they are unable to close the Museum down because they depend on the support the visitors provide for the
operating income. The building requires extensive restoration of the 1825, 1855 and 1952
portions of the building as well as construction of new exhibition cases
that provide proper environmental protection for these priceless relies
of Taos' past. |
