Location Description and History

The Kit Carson Home and Museum was originally opened to the public in 1952. Since that time nearly a million people have been through the Museum this has taken a toll on-structures that were never intended to be more than single family homes.

They are now in the process of completely restoring the home and reinterpreting and reinstalling the exhibitions throughout the Museum. This is both a slow and costly undertaking. Slow, because they are unable to close the Museum down because they depend on the support the visitors provide for the operating income. The building requires extensive restoration of the 1825, 1855 and 1952 portions of the building as well as construction of new exhibition cases that provide proper environmental protection for these priceless relies of Taos' past.
