Location Description and History

Billy the Kid had many friends in Puerto de Luna and patronized Alexander Grzelachowski's general store. He ate his last Christmas dinner at Grzelachowski's house as Pat Garrett's prisoner in 1880. On July 14, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett killed him in Fort Sumner. A street in Puerto de Luna, Kid Lane, commemorates his connection with the village.

An ancient adobe village in a hauntingly beautiful landscape, Puerto de Luna (10 miles south of Santa Rosa) was once the most thriving village in the area. According to one legend, Coronado's conquistadors built a bridge across the Pecos here and watched the moon come up behind rock outcroppings.

The area was not permanently settled until Civil War times, relatively late by Southwestern standards.

Early settlers found a beautiful, fertile valley with soft sweet drinking water from nearby springs and sufficient acequia water to irrigate their fields.
The coming of the railroad signaled the beginning of the end for Puerto de Luna when it was bypassed. Instead, the citizens of Santa Rosa were the ones to cheer the first train steaming into their town on Christmas Day of 1901.

The building that Alexander Grzelachowski was erected roughly about the same time Lawrence G Murphy put up his store in Lincoln. Constructed from stone, the walls of the building are a good three to four feet thick. There is a porch with pillars like that of the Tunstall store.

One of the pillars has a hole in it that is claimed to be a bullet hole put there by Billy the Kid. Three doorways lead inside from the porch, and over each there is an ornamental gable.

Inside, there are the old high ceilings and heavily worn floorboards. Originally, each room had a fireplace; the mantel pieces were long ago sold. The southern doorway leads into what is known to have been the saloon. Whereas the rest of the rooms are square in shape, the saloon is a long oblong.

The building is complete except for Grzelachowski's warehouse. Beneath the warehouse, there was a basement. It has since been filled in with earth to keep the Flores' cattle from falling into it. Mrs Flores' says the basement walls were filled with carved initials. Apparently, a small jail was once located behind the building. It, too is no longer standing.

Natural trifield meter / EVP experiment

The natural trifield meter was set to sum and the alarm is adjusted to zero. The "ghosts" were asked to make the alarm sound once for "yes", twice for "no". The session was recorded and also searched for possible EVP.
