The Double Eagle restaurant
is set in an 1840's mansion, the plaza's oldest building. The enormous
adobe resembles a series of treasure-filled caves. It actually houses
two restaurants -- the Double Eagle, serving pricey Continental fare
in posh salons and a ballroom, and the more casual, inexpensive Peppers,
its delicious New Mexican food presented in a patio covered by a transparent
ceiling.
The dozen rooms that are open to the public energetically bring
together such exotic features as Baccarat chandeliers the size of
sumo wrestlers, a 30-foot oak and walnut bar from Chicago's Drake
Hotel, museum-quality Pueblo folk art, a gilt-covered ceiling and
a lounge decorated with turquoise snakeskin. Double Eagle guests
feast on dinner in the regal Maximillian Room, which is adorned
with Baccarat crystal chandeliers and a ceiling leafed with 24 karat
gold.

In the 1850's the restaurant was the home of an
affluent Mexican family named Maese. One day the family hired a maid named
Ines. The family had a teenage son named Armando, who fell in love with
the maid, much to the distress of his mother.
Love persisted however and Carlota, the mother, came home one afternoon
to find the two lovers romantically entwined in her bedroom. Enraged at
what she saw, the mother grabbed a pair of scissors and went towards Ines
in order to stab her to death. In a attempt to protect his lover, Armando
leaped in front of Ines, and Carlota stabbed her son in the scuffle. Armando
soon died from his wound. Ines escaped the bloody scene and was not seen
in town for over a year. Carlota became a bitter and antagonistic woman.
 |
One evening, Ines returned to
Mesilla in disguise but was recognized in the plaza by a drunken cowboy.
A confrontation occurred between the two, and Ines was fatally shot.
Local citizens, unaware of her identity, brought her wounded body
into Carlota's home and placed it inside Carlota's very own bedroom.
It was there on Carlota's bed that Ines died.
Employees and guest alike say that the ghosts
of the young lovers inhabit the Carlota Salon to this day. The ghosts
apparently make their presence known in several different ways.
Broken glasses and turned over chairs are found in the morning when
opening up the building, inspite of high tech detection alarms which
are installed throughout the building. The alarm system itself has
a habit of going off by itself. When local law enforcement arrives
and enters the building, they are unable to find anyone.
|
There are two Victorian armchairs in the Carlota
room that are seldom used, yet the fabric is worn in the shape of a human
bodies. One is larger than the other but both small by today's standards.
Other phenomena that has been reported is a apparition
of a woman in the Maxillian room, just outside the kitchen door. Knives
have been found stacked upon the floor in the mornings. Employees also
hear their names called by a unseen presence.
Once a waitress was waiting on customers in the
Maxillian room. When she placed two cups of coffee upon the table before
the patrons, the cups started to slowly move by themselves. Then they
rapidly moved around the place mats, flatware and dishes, as if a unseen
hand was pushing them along. The cups eventually rested on the opposite
side of the table.

The
spirit of Inez remained quiet until the room was remodeled in the 1980s,
after which the ghost of Inez began gliding across the floor. The frighteningapparition
was also seen reflected in mirrors, and the photograph of her ghostly
form hangs in the Carlotta Room. Inez sometimes manifests asa cold spot
in the tiny room, which only seats eight people.
Unexplainable noises, such as the sounds of pottery
breaking and disembodiedvoices, are also heard in the area. At least a
dozen guests and employees have observed supernatural phenomena. On October
24, 1989,amazed witnesses saw eighty glasses fly off the back shelf onto
the floor, but only three of them broke.
We started our investigation in the Carlota Salon.
we swept the room thoroughly with EMF detectors but did not find anything
with abnormal electromagnetic fields. The whole room registered normal
background readings.
We were just about to leave when we noticed the
"fringes" on a antique crystal lamp was moving. We checked the
area around the lamp but there were not any ac vents or any other means
which could cause the fringes of the lamp to move. I discovered that the
lamp once lighted the boudoir of a famed red-light madam named Silver
City Millie. However our equipment registered nothing but normal background
readings when we swept the area around the lamp. We decided to move on
to the Lew Wallace room. as we started to exit, we noticed that the old
floor was weak and if stepped on hard enough, would shake the table on
which the lamp was located. So it is possible that the movement is associated
with the vibrations that are produced when someone walks on the floor.
In the Lew Wallace room we detected a strong suspect reading near a small
table in the corner of the room. We checked for the possibility of a man-made
electromagnetic field but there wasn't anything close enough to generate
this kind of field in that area. Upon further examination, we believe
that the field is the result of a antenna type of effect from the adobe
walls of the building. The remainder of this room registered nothing of
significance. We then moved on to the Gadsden patio.

The
Gadsden patio |
We moved around
the Gadsden patio, searching for any oddities in the room's electromagnetic
field. the room registered a reading that has a typical normal background
reading. There was one exception to this. when Odin was searching
the south side of the room, he registered a reading of 8.7 milligauss at 32Hz
for about 2 seconds.
We photographed the area and when the pictures were developed we
have a oddity on film.
This does qualify as a Target as we have
something that was caught on film while a suspect EMF reading was
present. However we have not ruled out the possibility of lens flare
due to the location of the mirror in the photo.
We
then move into the Maximillian room. The three Baccarat crystal
chandeliers that dominated the room measure three feet across and
are seven feet tall. they are in the classic french shape with 18
brass arms containing more than 1,000 hand cut lead crystals. they
are beautiful and add luster to the 18 and 24 karat gold pressed
metal ceiling. The balcony on the east wall was hand carved out
of a California Sequoia giant redwood. It is hand carved with black
bear heads and acanthus leaves which are gilded in gold. A very
impressive room indeed.
We caught our first suspect reading near a portrait of King George
on the west wall. We had a steady reading of 9.5 mg. Odin went to
get the manager so we could check the location of any electrical
lines which could be causing this field. They returned shortly and
confirmed that there were not any lines near the painting by at
least 8 feet. We checked the area of the wall near the known electrical
line and we received a reading of only 2.1 mg.

Besides
being very lavish, the room also has several antiques. The five round
tables in the room are antiques from the Victorian , East lake and Greek
revival periods. It is also rare to find a collection of this magnitude
of antique Queen Anne chairs.
