Also known as Birchville, Georgetown was the site of Apache raids,
gold mining, and double-crossings. A "silver city" during the 1880s,
it boasted a population of twelve hundred residents. The city was well planned
with the business district in the middle of town, the better residential area,
schools and churches to the north. The southern end of town harbored the jail,
miner's quarters, saloons and several brothels. The silver mines were located
across the gulch from the town and nestled in the hills beyond.
When the price of silver slumped in 1893, the town began to decline and eventually
the town fell into ruin. Today a few adobe walls remain but not much else. However
Georgetown's cemetery has survived and its tombstones contain many legible epitaphs
along with rumors that it may be haunted.
