Cafe
au Lait occupies what was once part of the Garcia home. It was built
by Nick Garcia for wife Pauline and family in the early 1900's.
The
cafe occupies the northern half of the building. The surrounding
buildings date back over two hundred years.
The
Garcia's ancestors first arrived in Albuquerque in 1706. The Sunflower
emblem on the building front is the Garcia trademark and can be
seen on adobe homes throughout the city.
Nick
Garcia was a social man who enjoyed late evenings spent playing
Three Card Monte with his closest friends.
Today,
the house is located at the back of the Poco a Poco Patio in Old
Town. It is surrounded by a variety of other shops and businesses.

S-1
- Unexplainable noises, including disembodied voices, are heard
coming from the area near the stairs and the rooms directly above.
Disembodied footsteps have also been heard coming down the eastern
balcony, moving south to north.
S-2
- Several unusual occurrences are centered around the kitchen. One
Saturday afternoon the cook, Dora, was in the kitchen and grease
had gotten all over the kitchen floor. She was trying to get to
the sink and couldn't because she kept slipping on the grease, she
made one final attempt to make it to the sink when she slipped and
fell backwards. But, instead of hitting the ground, invisible hands
caught her in mid air and lifted her to an upright position and
held on until she could get her balance. Pots and dishes are often
moved about in the dead of night, leaving the kitchen in disarray.
On Saturday evenings, female employees would feel a presence come
up behind them in the kitchen and some invisible force would pull
on their apron strings.

-
The sound of laughing has been heard coming from the balcony when
the building is empty except for the witnesses. When the source
of the laughing is investigated, the sounds stop completely. Objects
are also reported to move by themselves at this location.
Several
people believe that the ghost of Mr. Garcia and his friends are
the cause of the laughter and other odd phenomena. Security guard,
Ed, was checking on the Patio late one recent Saturday evening and
he heard roars of laughter coming from upstairs and he saw a light
on in the upstairs window. People weren't usually there so late
at night so the guard went upstairs to check it out. When he got
to the top of the stairs it was pitch dark, no light, and the building
was locked up tight with no one there.

We
arrived at 6:00pm and assembled the DVR system. Three IR cameras
were utilized, one in the kitchen facing south, and two watching
the balcony areas.
Initial
EM sweeps were conducted, including the basement and patio. Only
three readings were obtained. The first was a field of 2 nt located
in the storage room. A photograph taken after the reading was measured
shows a orb-like object near the back door.
The
second reading was a field measuring 1.5 nt and was stationary in
the kitchen area for several minutes. after searching the area it
was determined that this EM field was likely caused by water pipes
in the immediate vicinity.
The
highest reading obtained during the investigation was a spike of
3.2 nt near the doorway of the old store (second story). Several
photographs were taken in all directions of the balcony areas. One
photograph, taken from an angle looking down at the first floor,
revealed an unusual dark object in its center.
The
ghost hunt was concluded at 12:30am.

Investigation
The
SHIELD investigation was performed on 23 February 2006. The only
hypothesis that was tested concerned the story of the security guard
and the patio phenomena.
We
were able to prove that loud voices in the adjacent parking lot,
located to the southeast of the building, could easily echo into
the

patio
area. When standing at the front gate, the "source" of the voices
seemed to originate from the cafe.

Infrared
Analysis
A
IR analysis was done on the photograph taken from the balcony
area.
The
object in this photograph is not translucent and objects off to
its left are partially blurred. CCD residual imaging was ruled
out as a cause because the images taken before and after were
completely normal with no appropriate contrasting features to
cause that effect.
Lighter
coloration of the immediate areas to the left of the object suggest
that there may be some sort of thermal effect occurring, which
may also explain the blurring in the immediate area.
However,
the lighter coloration may also be indicative of the movement
of the object itself. This would imply that the object had come
through the door and is moving towards the kitchen or the object
had moved down from the balcony above.
The
dark coloration of the object itself indicates that it is significantly
colder than the surrounding environment.

Photo
1 was taken in the kitchen looking towards the storage room. This high
resolution photograph was taken after a small EM field was detected in
that area. The "orb" like object lacks diffraction rings, ruling
out airborne particle contamination.
Photo
2 was taken in the kitchen as well. No EM fields were located and this
may be an airborne contaminant. However, the image lacks definite diffraction
rings and appears to be moving.
Photo
3 was one of the photographs where an object was caught using the cross
capture method of photography. The object lacks diffraction rings and
is clearly obscured behind part of the shelving in the kitchen.
