Location Description and History

The front room of this building was constructed prior to 1706 as a Native American residence. Made of adobe bricks which are mortared with mud then protected with a layer of mud or cement, much of the original walls remain. The original vigas (wooden beams) are still visible in the ceiling.

Efficiently styled fireplaces, called "kivas" were the prime source of heat. Later this building was turned into a Spanish fort just before the settlement of Albuquerque was founded. The back of the building was where their horse coral was located. This are has since been built over and is now the main room of the building where bands play to the establishment's clientele.

Charelevoix Street was once nicknamed Burro Alley due to the laws that prohibited them in the plaza. After the fort was abandoned, the building became a stage coach stop.

In modern times the building has served as a restaurant, various mercantile shops, a bicycle shop and now a coffee shop.

Reported Phenomena

There are various rumors about the "ghost" that haunts this cafe. Some believe that it is a long passed Native American who still moves about the grounds, but the most popular theory is that it is a Spanish Soldier who once occupied the fort.

S-1 The door to the powerbox located here flies open with force on occasion. No logical explanation can be found as to why the electrical box door would violently fly open on its own accord. Often when this occurs, the heating is turned on.

S-2 Disembodied voices have been heard coming from the kitchen area. the voices sound like they are speaking Spanish, but are mumbled enough so that exactly what is being said is hard to understand. On occasion the sound of the voices is preceded by the uneasy feeling that you are being watched. Sudden "breezes" of cold air have also been experienced twice near the counter.

Lights turn on and off, apparently by themselves, throughout the entire location.

Looking towards the front door

It is also interesting to note that the coffee house is only one small part of the ancient Spanish fort.

The fort extended down towards the east to San Felipe street and turned south. Other shops within this area have also reported unusual occurrences that are similar in nature to those that occur at this location.

However, the locations on San Felipe street seem to be more consistently active than the Coffee house. This may be due to the location of living quarters and defensive positions when the area was a Spanish fort.

The Investigation

Initial survey completed on 13 February 2006.

Ghost hunt conducted on 26 February 2006.

The ghost hunt started at 6:00pm with Cody, Becky, Lori, Kristin and Ashley attending. The West side of the building was swept for unusual EM fields with a natural trifield meter. One photographer followed the instrumentation while another took random pictures of the location. After finding nothing of interest, the sweep continued down and up the east side of the location.

While taking photographs in the storage room, the random photographer had an unusual problem with his camera. The cd drive seemed to malfunction, spinning the cd (which is not typical ) while attempting to photograph the kitchen (S-2). After several seconds the drive turned off and a photograph was taken. This is the most interesting picture of the location.

Several other photos were taken throughout the building but many show diffraction rings and effects, indicating that they are probably air borne contaminants. However, one photograph does show an "orb" obscured by a chair. Also there are several of these objects that simply look very odd. No other interesting data was obtained from the location.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Investigation (26 February 2006)

The powerlines of the building are quite old and have high electromagnetic emissions, up to 8 milligauss in some areas. This is consistent with power levels in present neurological research that can induce the feeling of being watched. The present owner is now in the process of having an electrician rewire most of the building.

The condition of the wiring may also be the cause of the lights going on and off. The electrical demands of the cafe may often exceed that of the breakers in the electrical box causing them to trip or possibly not receiving enough voltage to properly function them.It was also noticed that the light in the men's bathroom flickered whenever the cappuccino machine was operating.

Initial Conclusions

Photo 1

Photo 2

Photo 3

Photo 1 - This was the photograph taken from the storage room towards the kitchen after the possible camera malfunction. at the present time we are not able to explain the cause of the object in this digital photograph. We have ruled out CCD residual effects by analyzing the photos taken before and after this image (both are normal with no oddities). The camera used to take this image has been used multiple times since this photo was taken and has not "malfunctioned" again. It has been in service for two years prior with no similar occurrences. Part of the tan object is transparent while the center is definitely obscured.

IR Analysis of Photo 1

Infrared analysis of the photograph shows areas of varying spectral frequencies that are not visible in the full color image.

Four distinct areas are cooler than the surrounding areas. Absorbance peaks in the near-IR region originate from the overtones and combinations of the fundamental (mid-IR) bands and from electronic transitions in the heaviest atoms. More than likely, the transparent portion of the object is formed by the scattering of the light while the darker regions may contain the absorptivities.

Although it may border on the three dot effect, the Infrared image clearly shows a more "human" like figure.

Photo 2 - The is an enlargement of the photograph taken in stage area that shows a partially obscured "orb". Since airborne particles must be fairly close to the lens, the object in the photo cannot be a dust particle.

Photo 3 - This "orb" contains diffraction rings, indicating that it is probably a dust particle or other airborne contaminant. However, it is the most unusual one that we have seen.
