Standing on a hill overlooking Cripple
Creek, the Hotel St. Nicholas is a very imposing sight. It all began
in 1893 when Sister Mary Baptist journeyed to Cripple Creek to open
a hospital. The St. Nicholas hospital would be the end result of
her efforts.
It was named in honor of Bishop Nicholas Matz who
dedicated the hospital on the afternoon of May 15, 1898.
In 1902 an addition was made to the hospital to serve as living
quarters for the Sisters.
Sections of the hospital were also
used as a ward for the mentally ill. Several violent crimes and
suicides have taken place within the hospital during the years.
The hospital closed its doors for the last time
in the mid seventies. Then it stood empty for twenty years. |
