Location Description and History

Just a block away from the Temple of Music and Art in downtown Tucson, the Royal Elizabeth is an 1878 Victorian adobe home in many ways quite similar to the nearby El Presidio B&B. This home's odd combination of architectural styles makes for a uniquely Southwestern-style inn. In classic 19th-century Tucson fashion, the old home looks thoroughly unpretentious from the outside, but inside you'll find beautiful woodwork and gorgeous Victorian-era antique furnishings.

Guest rooms open off a large, high-ceilinged central hall, which was a style commonplace in the old adobe homes of this area. The immediate neighborhood isn't as attractive as the El Presidio neighborhood surrounding the Tucson Museum of Art, but the museum, and several good restaurants, are within walking distance.

Built in 1878 as Tucson's frontier history unfolded, this Victorian adobe mansion served as the fashionable home of a prominent judge whose family members occupied it well into their old age.

Over time the building fell into a sorry state, broken into tiny low income apartments and rooms for rent. Ceilings were dropped from 15 feet or more right down to eight feet to conserve heat, hiding, yet preserving, much of its elegant past. When a Colorado home renovator saw this derelict delight in 1998, it was love at first sight. In short order, a building that local people viewed as a worthless pile of demolishable junk was polished into one of the city's rarest gems.

Narrative from Arizona sleeping with history

Reported Phenomena

Judge Blenman's ghost and presence are said to occupy the Sydney Marie Suite. This regal 500 square foot, two-room suite was historically Judge Blenman's law office. His apparition is more of a shadow and is most often spotted at the private entrance to the patio that adjoins the room, although he has also been seen, very briefly, in the grand main hall. He also turns lights on and off in the suite and the main hall and occasionally visits the Rose Room.

For the most part, the ghost seems to be respectful of guests and seldom bothers them. The majority of the sightings are experienced by the owners and employees of the business.

The Investigation

This was a investigation with the 93.7 KRQ ghost patrol. The radio DJ's and staff arrived late, allowing us to spend allot of time to check out the building.

We swept the building for unusual electromagnetic fields. We found a rather interesting field of 8 milligauss in the Sydney marie suite that appeared occasionally in the center of the room. Another smaller field of 4 milligauss was located in the main hall near the front door. This field completely vanished and we were not able to relocate it.

We then focused our attention on the Sydney Marie Suite. Photographers took up positions around the room as team members looked for the field that we found earlier. Whenever the field appeared, the photographers took photos towards the center of the room.

The high resolution photographs have "orb-like" phenomena in them while the low resolution photos contained nothing.

Initial Conclusions

The most interesting photograph (thumbnailed at left) was taken in the main hall just after we found an EM field of 4 milligauss near the front door. Photographers moved about the hall taking photos, resulting in this image.

There is an unusual ray of light coming from the window of the door that crosses over towards the right. Attempts to replicate this photo were unsuccessful and we have not found any explanation on how this "streak' of light could appear this way in a photo.
